December 1 — World AIDS Day
December 1 is observed worldwide as World AIDS Day. Today World AIDS Day remains relevant, reminding us that raising awareness of HIV infection and eradicating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV remain critically important.
The first case of AIDS was identified and described by scientists in 1981, and two years later its cause — HIV — was established. The disease began to spread at a tremendous speed, and in order to raise public awareness about this dangerous and incurable infection, in 1988 the World Health Organization proclaimed December 1 World AIDS Day. Since then, events aimed at strengthening organized efforts to combat HIV infection have been held in all regions of the world in the days before and after the official observance.
Today anyone can become infected with HIV, regardless of age, social status, level of wealth, or religion. Everyone who leads an unsafe lifestyle is at risk. The most common mode of transmission is sexual contact. But HIV infection can be prevented. Observing World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to talk about the disease again and intensify the fight against it, as well as to talk about tolerance and care for people living with HIV and learn more about their problems.
What does a modern person need to know about HIV/AIDS?
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the human immune system, causing it to lose the ability to protect the body from pathogenic microorganisms. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the terminal stage of HIV infection, which develops in a person against the background of severe immunodeficiency caused by long-term HIV infection and leads to death.
Three routes of HIV transmission are reliably known:
- sexual (one can become infected during any unprotected contact without using a condom, because a partner may be HIV-positive and not know it);
- through blood (with injection drug use, when using non-sterile medical instruments, including for tattoos, piercings, manicure, pedicure, when using someone else’s shaving items or toothbrushes);
- from mother to child (during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding).
HIV is not transmitted:
- by friendly kisses;
- by handshakes;
- by coughing or sneezing;
- through dishes, clothing, or bedding;
- when visiting a swimming pool, sauna, or toilet;
- by insect bites.
You cannot determine whether a person is infected by their appearance. The only way to know is to get tested for HIV!
Why is it important to know your HIV status?
Getting an HIV test result will help avoid uncertainty and anxiety. With a negative result: you can reduce the risk of future infection by changing your behavior to safer practices; you can be confident that you will not infect your sexual partner.
Early detection of HIV allows you to: preserve your health through timely consultation and treatment (HIV/AIDS treatment in our country is available and free for citizens of the Russian Federation); reduce the risk of infecting your sexual partner; plan a pregnancy and significantly reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to a future child thanks to the timely prescription of antiretroviral therapy.
