      The head of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, together with the First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Russia Sergey Kiriyenko, the President of the Republic of Abkhazia Badra Gunba and local residents, took part in the opening after improvement of a square with a light-dynamic fountain in the New District of Sukhumi. He reported this on his social media. The square is now awaiting an official name; for now it is being called the “Nizhny Novgorod” square.

      The area of the newly renovated space is 1.8 hectares. The mayor wrote that the new territory includes an extended promenade area with playgrounds, swings, an amphitheater, bright small architectural features, greenery and a dry musical fountain that “sings” the Sormovskaya lyrical. “Now the republican capital has a little piece of Nizhny Novgorod. In the New District, where the square is located, 40,000 people live who have come to know our city in a new way,” Yuri Shalabaev noted.

      According to him, another landmark Sukhumi location — the Mahadjir Embankment — was adorned, modeled on Nizhny Novgorod, with architectural and artistic lighting that highlighted the grandeur of the century-old eucalyptus trees. The Sukhumi colonnade was illuminated as well.

      “These projects have become part of a large joint effort carried out by our region under the leadership of Governor Gleb Nikitin and Nizhny Novgorod. The value of this partnership grows every year. We are ready to move forward!” emphasized the head of Nizhny Novgorod.

      Local residents, who witnessed the transformation of the square in the New District, note how their walks here have changed.

      “When we’re free, we want to go to the square both in the morning and in the evening. Walks here lift the mood. Everything here is wonderful! Children come here to ride the swings. And everyone is absolutely delighted with the fountain! Even in such cold the kids run between the jets. Thank you so much for doing everything from the heart!” said a resident of Sukhumi.

      Her friend agreed: “It’s nice to receive such a gift. Being here is a pleasure. There are places to sit and things to look at. Everyone likes it when it’s done beautifully. We are very pleased.”

      Another Sukhumi resident noted that the square’s grounds have become very well kept and wished that the space would be preserved as beautiful. “My greatest wish is that the children be happy, and that the area be well cared for, that we cherish it. Who wouldn’t like such beauty?” she concluded.

      Earlier it was reported that the improvement of the square in the New District of Sukhumi was implemented as part of the international eco-project “Friendship Space Nizhny Novgorod — Sukhumi” and became part of a large cooperation program between the twin cities Nizhny Novgorod and Sukhumi within the implementation of a roadmap that includes more than 60 events.
