The "Limpopo" Zoo in Nizhny Novgorod has welcomed new residents — two representatives of the largest species of marsupials on the planet. They are large red kangaroos, considered the largest mammals in Australia.
According to the zoo's press service, the new residents are two males who are brothers. The older is just over a year old, the younger nine months. Despite their young age, both may grow to impressive sizes: adult males reach two meters in height and can weigh up to 90 kilograms.
"You could say that the kangaroos that have settled with us are still children. But considering that males continue to grow even after reaching sexual maturity, we are confident that our newcomers will become the largest in Russia," said zoo director Vladimir Gerasichkin.
In addition to the large red kangaroos, visitors to "Limpopo" can also see other members of the family — large gray kangaroos, which are second in size only to their red relatives, as well as Bennett's wallabies. All of them inhabit the zoo's second enclosure.
Earlier it was reported that a rare echidna named Hiba, born at Nizhny Novgorod's "Limpopo," was relocated to a zoo in Crimea.
It was also reported that a yak calf was born at the Nizhny Novgorod zoo.
