      In 1918 more than 40 people were shot on the island, including monks. Their bodies were thrown directly into the Volga. After the collapse of the USSR, a wooden cross and later a stone cross were erected on the island in memory of the tragic events.

      The idea of building the memorial complex "Nizhny Novgorod Golgotha" was conceived as early as 2917. The first concepts appeared then. It was planned that it would include a chapel, a pier and a parking lot, and that a road would be built to the island.

      A final decision has not yet been made, but the diocese said it has not abandoned these plans. Work on the project continues, but the timeline has not yet been determined.

      It was previously reported that Medinsky and Nikitin announced a competition to create a monument to Russian freedom.
