A memorial complex will be built on Death Island near Nizhny Novgorod.

      30 November 2025 13:03 Society On Mochalny Island, which is located on the Borsky side of the Volga (opposite the Chkalov Staircase), a memorial complex is planned. NewsNN reports, citing representatives of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese.

      Tragic events took place here in 1918 — more than forty people were shot on the island, among them monks. After the execution their bodies were thrown into the waters of the Volga. In memory of the victims, a wooden cross was first erected at the site of the massacre, and later a stone one. This occurred after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

      The idea of creating a full-fledged memorial complex called "Nizhny Novgorod Golgotha" has been discussed since 2017. At that time the first concept was proposed, including the construction of a chapel, a pier, a parking area and the laying of a road to the island.

      Although a final decision on the project has not yet been made, the diocese emphasizes that the initiative has not lost its relevance and work on it continues. No specific timelines for implementation have been given.

      Earlier it became known that the authorities plan to install in the waters of the Strelka a monument to the idea of Russian Freedom. A competition for the monument's design has been announced.
