Early elections for deputies to the Jogorku Kenesh (parliament) of the Kyrgyz Republic are being held for the first time in the Nizhny Novgorod region. A polling station has been opened in the office of the republic's honorary consulate in the capital of the Volga region. A correspondent from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" visited there.
The peculiarity of this election campaign is that Kyrgyz citizens located outside the republic can vote at any polling station. The only requirements are possession of an identity document, biometric registration, and residence registration in Kyrgyzstan. After identification at the polling station, the system automatically determines the constituency in which the citizen is registered and prints a ballot with the surnames of the candidates running in that constituency.
The progress of voting in the Volga region's capital is being monitored as international observers by Margarita Andreeva, chair of the Nizhny Novgorod regional election commission, and Marina Ovchinnikova, a member of the regional election commission. Andreeva noted that the polling station is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. "Voting is taking place in accordance with all the norms of the legislation in force in the republic," she said.
The regional election commission stressed that the approach of the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as the country's diplomatic corps, to organizing voting abroad is a vivid and positive example of how the state and election organizers ensure the exercise of the electoral rights of their citizens abroad.
There is no excitement or queues at the polling station. The honorary consul of Kyrgyzstan in Nizhny Novgorod, Vadim Yun, answering a question about turnout, noted that these are the first elections in the region when Kyrgyz citizens can vote remotely. Therefore they themselves are interested to find out "how many active Kyrgyz citizens are present in the region."
The honorary consul's office opened in Nizhny Novgorod in February 2025.
