A swan that did not fly away with the onset of cold weather was spotted on Lake Nizhnie Sushki in the Artyomovskie meadows of Kstovo District. This was reported by the Ministry of Forestry.

The agency noted that after receiving information about the bird, hunting inspectors went to the site. The specialists conducted a visual inspection from the greatest possible distance the swan would allow. In their assessment, the bird showed no visible injuries or signs of illness.

The Ministry of Ecology added that swans often linger in the region longer than other migratory birds, and sometimes stay for the winter. This behavior is related to the species of the bird, habitat characteristics, and weather conditions. Some individuals migrate to warmer regions, while others find a way to overwinter on unfrozen bodies of water.

"Some individuals go to winter in warmer regions, while others prefer to stay in their native areas, finding suitable conditions to survive the cold months near large bodies of water," the agency explained.

Residents are advised not to feed the swan so as not to create an attachment to humans, especially during a possible migration period.

Inspectors will continue to monitor the swan and, if necessary, take action. If the bird remains and when the lake begins to freeze over, specialists will be able to capture it and transport it to a safer location. However, before the body of water freezes, this is practically impossible.

It is worth noting that in the summer on the Artyomovskie meadows of the Nizhny Novgorod region, six pairs of rare mute swans successfully raised offspring.
