      The head of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, presented the Cup for the Best Player of the Month for October to Torpedo hockey club goalkeeper Denis Kostin. The new sports tradition — the presentation of a rotating award — was launched by the city administration together with the Center for Management and Development of Sports in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and is aimed at encouraging athletes of the city's professional clubs for their achievements.       The Cup presentation ceremony took place before a Kontinental Hockey League regular-season match in which Nizhny Novgorod’s Torpedo met Moscow’s Spartak on the ice arena of the Nagorny Sports Palace. The Nizhny Novgorod team defeated the Muscovites 4–3.

      “In Nizhny Novgorod there is a new sports tradition — last month we presented the Cup for the Best Player of the Month across all of the city’s professional clubs for the first time. Based on the results of September it was absolutely deservedly awarded to Maria Samoylova from our futsal team Normanachka. Tonight we presented the award for the best player of October at the game. I was pleased to hand the Cup to Torpedo’s goalkeeper Denis Kostin. In October he topped numerous rankings evaluating KHL players’ performances, received the Kozma Minin Helmet as the team’s best player. His sporting career, both in junior and senior teams, is worthy of imitation among our youth. Let us wish him good luck! I am confident this will not be his last achievement, that many more victories lie ahead,” said Yuri Shalabaev.

      The head of the city emphasized that the administration of Nizhny Novgorod, together with the Center for Management and Development of Sports in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, is actively working on the development of both professional and mass sport, including youth programs. “We are using many tools for this, including recently introducing a scholarship for young athletes who have finished our children’s sports schools and have been enrolled in professional clubs. It is clear that their salaries at the initial stage are not very high, they are just starting out, playing in junior teams or in reserve squads. To give them motivation, we provide a monthly scholarship to the best of them. The presentation of the Cup for the Best Player of the Month among all sports clubs is also one of the motivating components,” noted the mayor, adding that at a recent meeting with the athletes who received the first sports scholarships the youngsters admitted that such support is indeed needed. Yuri Shalabaev assured that work in this direction will continue.

      Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod goalkeeper Denis Kostin was recognized as the Best Player of October following voting and the commission’s review. The athlete demonstrated a worthy performance during the past month, playing eight games and recording six wins, including one shutout. He became the leader of the KHL player ratings for the last three weeks of October and was named the best player of the fourth week of the month. In addition, the goalkeeper made the top five saves of October, and his save in the second week of the month was marked as the “Save of the Week.” On October 30, in a match against Lada, Denis received the Kozma Minin Helmet as the team’s best player. This season the hockey player decorated his goalie helmet with words from a Nizhny Novgorod lyric: “The city stands, so much like a bright dream, Nizhny…,” which has become a symbol of his attachment to the city.

      “It was a bit unexpected, but very pleasant to learn before the game that I would be presented with the Cup for the Best Player of the Month for my achievements. It’s nice that people are watching us closely, cheering for us. This is a good initiative that helps popularize various sports in Nizhny Novgorod. Perhaps those who were not previously interested in hockey will begin to take an interest in it,” says goalkeeper Denis Kostin.

      Fans unanimously noted that the award is absolutely deserved and that such support should continue.

      “This is a certain success for each player, something they work toward every day in training. I am very glad that this award was given to Denis Kostin — he showed a worthy game. Most of the victories we achieved this year are, in part, thanks to him. He brought confidence to the team. Our goalkeeping coach Nikolai Khabibulin was right to notice him and invite him to the team. Denis shows excellent results! I congratulate him on this award,” said fan Mikhail.

      “I have supported Torpedo since my earliest years. I immediately fell in love with this sport; I liked the pace of the game. I believe that in October Denis truly proved what he is capable of. He won the competition with our already well-known goalkeeper Ivan Kulbakov. I think it’s fair to say that Denis is now goalie number one. I’m sure everything will go well for him going forward. If he continues in the same spirit, we will occupy the highest positions! Go, Torpedo!” said young fan Stepan.

      “This is a very good initiative; sport should be encouraged, especially regional sport. The athlete will have an additional incentive. He will push himself even harder, will try not only to think about the Cup or the awards of the championship he plays in, but also to think about this trophy. Denis is definitely deserving. Next month, when a new holder of the trophy is determined, it would be great to organize the handover directly at the match from the current holder to the future one. We can see that hockey is developing in the city, new hockey rinks are being built, stadiums are being renovated. For example, the Vodnik reconstruction project is currently presented as a very interesting one,” shared Nizhny Novgorod resident Evgeny.

      On his social media the head of the city congratulated the Nizhny Novgorod team on a long-awaited and well-deserved victory.
