      Distance selling: what consumers should pay attention to

      Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular in Russia, as selling goods through online stores is convenient and very profitable for both sellers and buyers. However, along with increased consumer activity, the activity of fraudsters is also growing; they exploit popular schemes and invent new scams to obtain money. So how can you avoid becoming a victim of fraud when buying goods online?

      Carefully study the seller’s profile. Pay attention to the profile description, its rating and reviews. Familiarize yourself with the information about the seller posted on the online store’s website. If that information does not include details about the seller’s legal form and registered address, be cautious.

      Beware of communicating off-platform. Be wary of requests to continue the conversation in messengers (WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram). You may be told that the site’s functionality is not working correctly and that it’s better to complete the transaction outside the resource. Never give in to such persuasion.

      Pay only through the payment services offered by the online platform you have chosen. In that case you can be confident in the security of the payment and the safety of the funds on your card. When paying through official services, the money you deposit is held until you receive the goods or service, which protects you from losing money. Only after you confirm receipt of the order you requested and have no complaints about its quality does the marketplace forward the funds to the seller.

      Do not send prepayment for goods or services: prepayment increases the risk of fraud. If possible, choose payment on delivery so you will have the opportunity to check/try on the item.

      Do not disclose CVV/CVC codes or SMS codes to users: in chat conversations fraudsters, under various pretexts, may try to obtain information that would enable them to carry out unauthorized transactions with your bank card.

      Communicate with users only through the online platform’s chat and do not follow links posted in other messengers: fraudsters often use phishing sites disguised as legitimate online marketplace resources (the domain name may differ by only one character). Links to phishing sites are typically left in messengers. In most cases link sharing is blocked in such chats. If a platform does not block links sent to users, simply do not click on them.

      Pay attention to prices: a common trick used by fraudsters is to attract attention with extremely low prices. Be suspicious if you are offered a product at a price several times lower than the average market price.

      Do not transfer money using a phone number: the risks with this payment method are many times higher — after receiving the money the seller may simply disappear, blocking you in messengers, on the site itself, and adding your phone number to a blacklist. Naturally, under such circumstances you will not receive any goods.
