In the Nizhny Novgorod Region, a kidney transplant was performed for the first time within the public healthcare system. The operation took place at the N.A. Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital, where local surgeons, together with specialists from the Academician V.I. Shumakov National Medical Research Center for Transplantology and Artificial Organs, successfully operated on an 18-year-old patient with a congenital condition.
This was reported by the region’s governor, Gleb Nikitin, on his Telegram channel. According to him, transplantation is one of the most complex and high-tech procedures in medicine.
As Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIA "Statsionar-press", said, the kidney donor was the young patient’s father.
To be able to carry out such operations, the regional hospital underwent extensive preparation: doctors were trained at federal centers, the hospital obtained the necessary license and was equipped with modern medical equipment.
Gleb Nikitin noted that there are about 1,300 people in the region undergoing renal replacement therapy. Many of them could become candidates for transplantation. The clinic has already formed a waiting list for such patients.
Organ transplant surgeries will be performed at the surgical department of the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital. The governor emphasized that this operation was a significant achievement for the team, which serves as a pillar of regional healthcare.
The chief freelance transplant specialist of the Russian Ministry of Health, RAS academician Sergey Gotié, congratulated the Nizhny Novgorod surgeons on this momentous event. "About a month ago we discussed the possibility of performing the first kidney transplant already this year. Nizhny Novgorod specialists are clearly following the set goals and are raising the bar in terms of the results of the preparatory work," he said.
Earlier it became known what changed at the Balakhna Central District Hospital after criticism from the governor.
