Biological treatment at the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station will be enhanced after reconstruction.

Commissioning of new equipment continues at the Nizhny Novgorod Aeration Station. At the same time, the first phase of the reconstruction has been completed by more than 98%.
Last week testing of the primary settling tanks began. After removal of large debris and sand, wastewater flows into these tanks, where suspended particles settle. Biological treatment then begins in the aeration tanks.
Specialists are currently commissioning the tanks where wastewater is treated for nitrogen and phosphorus using activated sludge — bacteria that break down organic matter when air is supplied.
After the commissioning work is completed, the station's biological treatment technology will change. Instead of a linear aeration scheme, the wastewater will pass through alternating anaerobic (without air) and aerobic (with air supplied) zones. This will allow for deeper and more efficient purification of contaminated water.
As part of the first phase, five tanks with a total area of about 23,000 square meters have been reconstructed — comparable to three football fields.
Full startup of the aeration station in the new mode is planned by the end of the current year.
Earlier it was reported that the open channels through which untreated wastewater flows at the station have been covered.
