Ecologist Batashev explained whether an artificial Christmas tree can harm your health.

03 November 2025 12:44 Society With the approach of the New Year, many people face the usual question: which tree to choose — real or artificial? Ecologist Anatoly Batashev told 360.ru how to make the right choice and not harm yourself or nature.

According to him, artificial trees do not pose a threat to health with normal use. Although plastic can emit toxic substances, their concentration is too low to cause harm. The exception is if such a tree is set on fire: harmful compounds are indeed released during burning. Otherwise, it is enough to ventilate the room after installation, especially if the product emits a chemical smell. If the smell is strong and unpleasant, it is better to refuse the purchase.

If an artificial tree has been stored for a long time and has become covered in dust, it should be thoroughly washed and dried before the holiday. It is also important to securely fasten the structure, especially if there are small children or pets in the house. A falling plastic tree can cause injury, and with the string lights switched on — even an electric shock.

He also noted that an artificial tree is made of plastic, and about as much energy goes into producing it as is required to fell ten live trees. At the same time, such products can be used repeatedly, which seems like a practical solution. However, despite their attractive appearance and fullness, an artificial tree cannot replace the scent of real needles, which is associated with the holiday.

The ecologist emphasized that the global environmental situation will not change depending on whether a person chooses an artificial tree, a live one, or decides to forgo a tree altogether. Batashev noted that live trees for the New Year are not cut down in the forest but are specially grown in nurseries. Therefore, buying a real fir does not harm nature.

To keep a live tree standing for as long as possible, it is important to choose the tree correctly. Needles should be resilient and hold firmly on the branches, and rubbing a branch between your fingers should release a rich pine scent. A branch should be flexible and return to its original position when bent. The bark should not have damage or signs of mold, and the needles should be an even green color. Fresh trees have needle tips with a light pale-green hue. Also pay attention to the trunk: it should be thick enough to support the weight of the branches and absorb water well. If tapping the base of the trunk on the ground causes a little needle drop, the tree is fresh. If needles fall off heavily, it is better not to take such a tree.

It is better to buy a tree at Christmas tree markets where trees are stored in the shade, in water, or under snow — this way they stay fresh longer. After purchase, do not immediately bring the tree into a warm room. It is better to leave it for several hours on the balcony or in the entryway so it can adapt to the temperature change. Before installation, it is recommended to make a fresh cut 2–3 centimeters above the old one — this will ensure better water uptake. The tree should be placed in a bucket or stand with water and it should be topped up daily. To prolong freshness, you can add an aspirin tablet and a couple of tablespoons of sugar to the water.
