The Gorodets hydroelectric facility, located near Nizhny Novgorod, is planned to be put into operation in test mode in 2026. This was reported by the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Andrey Nikitin, during a working meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
As the minister noted, commissioning the facility before construction work is fully completed will allow the throughput capacity of the Volga–Baltic Waterway section to be increased ahead of schedule. This decision is aimed at accelerating the restoration of navigation and improving the efficiency of river transport.
Nikitin also noted that in the coming years special attention will be paid to the development of the inland water transport system, including infrastructure modernization and the expansion of cargo shipments on rivers.
It should be recalled that in the summer of 2025 a serious accident occurred at the Gorodets hydro facility, as a result of which navigation in the Gorodets area was suspended for several days. Earlier, draft restrictions for vessels had been introduced on the Volga in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
