New rules for preventive medical examinations of children have come into force in the Nizhny Novgorod region. They were approved by the Ministry of Health and will be in effect until September 2031, RIA Novosti reports. Now some examinations have been shifted to different ages. For example, the first neurologist check-up for infants will be at three months instead of one month, and the first visit to the dentist will be at one year. Checks of reproductive health for boys and girls have been moved: the first visit to a urologist-andrologist or gynecologist will take place at six years, and annual examinations will begin at 13 years, not 14 as before.
In addition, at the one-month examination the child must now have a fundus eye exam — ophthalmoscopy with pupil dilation. The same examination will be repeated at one year. Hearing screening (audiological screening) may be conducted during the first year of life if it was not done earlier. It will also be carried out at the one- and six-year examinations.
A pediatrician can now conduct the examination not only at a children’s polyclinic but also a family doctor — depending on the assigned area. At 1.5 and 2 years specialists will check for risks of disorders of mental development through parent questionnaires. Another innovation — children in risk groups will now have their cholesterol levels measured at six and ten years using test strips.
