Futsal player Maria Samoylova was named Nizhny Novgorod's "Best Player of September".

      This weekend the mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, launched a new sports tradition — presenting a Cup to the best player of the month.

      The award ceremony took place at a match of the Russian Futsal Championship between Nizhny Novgorod’s "Normanochka" and "Laguna-UOR" from Penza.

      The Cup was awarded to Normanochka forward Maria Samoylova.

      It is worth noting that the Nizhny Novgorod side put on an excellent performance today, winning 5–1. Maria also scored in that match.

      Recall that at the end of September Nizhny Novgorod announced a new program to support young athletes. The best players of the city’s six leading clubs will receive monthly stipends of 50,000 rubles. The initiative is being implemented by the city administration together with the Center for Sports Management and Development. The city will also begin to award the title of Player of the Month on a monthly basis.

      Yuri Shalabaev added that the "Player of the Month" award will be given not only for sporting achievements but also for active participation in social initiatives. This will allow not only recognition of athletes’ professionalism but also an emphasis on their contribution to the development of the city and society.

      "I’m already getting a sporting itch to find out who will become Player of the Month in October. We’re waiting!" the mayor wrote on his Telegram channel.
