The Investigative Committee has opened a case of negligence over the reconstruction of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station.

      23 October 2025, 18:37 — Incidents. A criminal case has been opened on charges of negligence (part 1, art. 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) during the reconstruction of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station, the regional Investigative Committee’s press service reported.

      According to the investigation, officials of the resource-supplying organization and the environmental oversight service violated the rules for operating sources of harmful substance emissions into the air. This, the Investigative Committee says, led to a significant violation of the rights and lawful interests of Nizhny Novgorod residents.

      It was noted that the case was opened based on materials from an inspection by the Nizhny Novgorod interdistrict environmental prosecutor’s office and the regional FSB directorate.

      Investigators are establishing the circumstances of what happened and the causes that contributed to it.

      Recall that residents of Nizhny Novgorod have been complaining for several months about a persistent sewage smell. In mid-October deputies demanded an explanation for the stench. And yesterday it emerged that the general director of the resource-supplying organization responsible for the aeration station moved his office to the station “to optimize work processes.”

      It was also reported that the aeration station again received a warning from Rosprirodnadzor.
