The investigation into a major theft of nickel-containing waste in the Nizhny Novgorod region has been completed, the press service of the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported.
According to the investigation, the group operated from July 2021 to February 2025. It initially included four employees of a metalworking company: two shift foremen, a cold-metal cutter and a driver. During shifts they deliberately created excess metal waste and entered false information into the documents. The stolen material was first hidden on the company’s premises, and then the driver transported the metal to his home.
To conceal their participation in the thefts, the accused used other people’s bank cards and passport details, which were voluntarily provided to them by other citizens, to receive money from selling the metal.
In total, the group stole 4,872 kg of metal worth nearly 7 million rubles. The organizer divided the proceeds from the sales among all participants.
Later two men decided to stop participating in the scheme, and the remaining members recruited a new participant — a 33-year-old shop foreman. In February 2025 the company’s security detained the wrongdoers as they attempted to take another batch of metal out.
All five pleaded guilty. Two of them have been remanded in custody, one is under house arrest, and two are under a written undertaking not to leave. Assets of the suspects have been seized in the amount of more than 1.3 million rubles, of which over one million has already been reimbursed.
The criminal case will be sent to court after the indictment is approved. The maximum penalty under the charges is up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to one million rubles.
Earlier it was reported that former spouses were found guilty of selling counterfeit products disguised as goods of well-known brands in Nizhny Novgorod.
