After a major renovation, one of the key inpatient buildings of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children's Clinical Hospital (NODKB) — the treatment and diagnostic building — has begun operating. The building houses administrative offices, two conference halls and a diagnostic department with a latest-generation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.
The hospital’s chief physician, Svetlana Belozerova, conducted a tour of the renovated premises for journalists, which was attended by a correspondent from NIA "Nizhny Novgorod". Belozerova noted that the building is used not only for treatment but also for educational and administrative activities.
A week earlier, the building’s capabilities were demonstrated to Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko by the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin.
New equipment has been installed in the building, including a 3-Tesla MRI scanner. As explained by the head of the MRI unit, radiologist Larisa Trynkova, this equipment allows for more accurate and faster examinations.
"We had our old scanner that was working before. But we were hoping we would have the opportunity to work in better conditions and perform higher-quality examinations. And finally we got it," the doctor said.
According to her, abdominal examinations now take 20–30 minutes instead of the previous 40–50. The scanner can diagnose diseases of the brain and spinal cord, organs of the chest and abdomen, and the limbs. Examinations are free of charge, as before, and are available to children not only from Nizhny Novgorod and the region but also from neighboring regions.
She added that many young patients can now undergo the procedure without anesthesia, which was previously difficult due to the length of the examination. About 20 MRI scans are performed per day.
The building also includes two conference halls with seating capacities ranging from 180 to 250. Lectures and professional events for regional doctors are held here. According to Belozerova, the halls are already being used for training events, and a series of conferences, including with federal specialists, is planned in the near future.
Thus, in November the hospital will host an interregional conference organized by NODKB. And in June 2026 Nizhny Novgorod will host a major event under the auspices of the Association of Regional Children's Hospitals at the Russian Clinical Children's Hospital. Heads of hospitals from various regions of the country are expected to participate.
According to Svetlana Belozerova, the building was renovated in stages, taking into account the continuous operation of the institution. Work has now been completed on two buildings, three others are at an advanced stage of readiness. They are planned to be commissioned by the end of the year.
In addition, work is being completed in the food service unit, the isolation building for patients with infectious diseases or suspected infections, and the pathology department.
"Equipment and furniture have already been purchased for all the buildings. Now we have the pleasant task of cleaning everything and putting it in place. And I hope we will start admitting patients from the new year," the chief physician added.
The modernization is being carried out under a federal program funded through 2028. At the same time, the main equipment, including the MRI, was purchased with regional budget funds.
As part of the "Health Quarter" project, implemented at the governor's initiative, not only is a major overhaul of NODKB being carried out, but infrastructure development is also underway in cooperation with the Research Institute — the B.A. Korolev Specialized Cardiac Surgery Clinical Hospital. This involves centralizing a number of services of the two hospitals: laboratories, the food service unit, transport, and building and grounds maintenance. In addition, improvement works are being carried out, including the creation of convenient access roads and parking for patients.
Recall that a new Dispensary Monitoring Center has opened at the Nizhny Novgorod Cardiocenter named after Korolev. Earlier we showed what the three-story polyclinic looks like inside.
