Public hearings on the modernization of the municipal solid waste landfill have begun in Balakhna.

      Public hearings have begun in the Balakhna Municipal District on amendments to the land use and development rules concerning the territory of the intermunicipal solid municipal waste landfill of JSC "Sitimatik-Nizhny Novgorod."

      The discussion will continue until October 24. As the company explained, the documentation adjustment is necessary to implement the site modernization project, while its area will remain the same.

      The area of the plot occupied by the landfill is 24.63 hectares, of which 24.3 hectares are allocated for waste placement. After sorting and the extraction of recyclable fractions, the facility receives about 160,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year.

      As part of the modernization, a multi-layer waterproofing system using geomembranes is planned to be implemented. The project also provides for the installation of modern systems for collecting and treating leachate and biogas, as well as the creation of a digital platform for round-the-clock monitoring of the landfill’s condition.

      "The project is aimed at creating a modern waste management infrastructure that will take into account the interests of the region's residents and ensure environmental protection. The modernization will significantly raise the facility's technological level and make it safe and efficiently managed, with strict compliance with environmental protection standards," the company noted.

      It was previously reported that the regional operator "Sitimatik-NN" was fined for environmental violations in the Gorodetsky District. The court also ordered "Sitimatik-NN" to pay a million-ruble fine for soil damage.
