Three years in captivity: a Nizhny Novgorod sailor rescued from Ukrainian captivity
06 October 2025 13:15 Society
One of the four Nizhny Novgorod residents released last week from Ukrainian captivity turned out to be a sailor — a crew member of a civilian vessel detained in the port of Odesa in 2022. This is reported by "Kommersant‑Privolzhye".
After the start of the special military operation, the Nizhny Novgorod resident was arrested by Ukrainian authorities and subsequently sentenced to imprisonment on charges of encroaching on Ukraine's territorial integrity.
Of all the released residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region, he spent the longest time in detention — almost three years.
The return of the citizens was reported by Russia's Commissioner for Human Rights, Tatyana Moskalkova. According to her, the meeting with the released was accompanied by strong emotions.
"It is impossible to describe with what relief and tears in their eyes people came to meet us. Many of them endured threats, pressure, isolation — but did not break. Their resilience, faith in justice and confidence that Russia will not abandon its own inspire and remind us what we work for every day," Moskalkova emphasized.
Earlier, it was reported that another resident of the Nizhny Novgorod region had been returned home from captivity in Ukraine.
