Developments by Nizhny Novgorod scientists that will form the basis of the region’s forthcoming Center for the Development of Industrial Robotics are being showcased at Digital Innopolis Days 2025 at Innopolis University (Republic of Tatarstan).

The center is being established on the basis of Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R. E. Alekseev (NGTU) with the support of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The project is being implemented with federal grant funds in accordance with the goals and objectives of the national project “Means of Production and Automation,” initiated by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.

The Center’s booth features advanced solutions in automation and “smart” manufacturing — such as a robotic welding cell (a joint development of NGTU and LLC “VR Robotics”), a VR welding trainer (a joint development of NGTU and LLC “PKF ‘Bk-Studio’”), a hardware-software complex for diagnostics and predictive analytics of robotic system units (developed by NGTU), as well as a collaborative robotic cell with a machine vision system and adaptive soft grippers for handling fragile glass products (developed by NGTU), where two robots with soft grippers demonstrate careful packaging of fragile glass items and quality control.

“The creation of the Center for Industrial Robotics is a crucial project for the region, as robotization helps solve several fundamental tasks at once: increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of our industry, as well as reducing the demand for labor. The government is providing all possible support for the successful implementation of the project,” said Andrey Sanosyan, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

Sergey Mantserov, head of the Center for the Development of Industrial Robotics, said that work is being carried out in parallel to create the infrastructure and to define tasks for specialists with the participation of industrial partners.

“For the center’s placement, premises have been designated in one of NGTU’s buildings, architectural and design projects have been developed, a concept for a robotic production facility has been prepared, a professional team has been formed, and key specialists have been hired. At the same time, we are actively developing partnership relations with industrial enterprises,” he said.

The delegation from the Nizhny Novgorod Region to the forum was led by Deputy Chairwoman of the regional government Ekaterina Solntseva. The delegation included employees of the Nizhny Novgorod NOC, regional universities and companies implementing various projects in the field of production automation.

This year’s forum program includes tracks on industrial and service robotics, the application of artificial intelligence, business education, the development of technologies and industry.

“The forum has an intensive business program, and the Nizhny Novgorod Region, as one of the country’s scientific and engineering centers, will actively participate in the discussions. In particular, we will share with colleagues from other regions our experience in using artificial intelligence in scientific work — we will talk about real-world applications of AI in chemistry, biology and materials science. Today, the region operates unique approaches to organizing the interaction of education, science, business and government, which will also be of interest to forum participants,” said Ekaterina Solntseva.

“Participation in such events makes it possible to demonstrate how the joint work of science and industry produces practical results. Our developments in robotics and artificial intelligence are already being applied in production, increasing companies’ efficiency, and the forum, in turn, opens new opportunities for partnership and exchange of experience with leading industry experts,” emphasized Sergey Dmitriev, Rector of Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R. E. Alekseev.

Recall that in August 2025, with the support of the Autonomous Nonprofit Organization ‘Nizhny Novgorod NOC’ and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Entrepreneurship of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, NGTU named after R. E. Alekseev won the competition to create the Center for the Development of Industrial Robotics. It will become a key element of the region’s infrastructure in the field of automation and the digital transformation of industry. Among the center’s areas of activity are the creation of a full-cycle scientific and production complex, the implementation of engineering projects, as well as the development and commercialization of domestic robotic solutions.

The period from 2022 to 2031 has been declared the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. The main objectives of the Decade are to attract talented young people to research and development, to involve researchers and developers in solving the most important tasks of societal and national development, and to increase public awareness of the achievements and prospects of domestic science.
