A Nizhny Novgorod resident was sentenced to 29 years for the murder of a girl committed 30 years ago.

      A court in the Nizhny Novgorod Region found a 63-year-old man guilty of murdering a minor, a crime committed back in 1996. The conviction was based on evidence collected by investigative authorities that the court deemed sufficient.

      The criminal case was opened on November 20, 1996, after the body of a 17-year-old girl showing signs of violent death was found in the schoolyard in Pavlovo.

      The investigation proved extremely difficult because the crime had been committed under unclear circumstances. Nevertheless, work to identify the perpetrator continued for almost three decades.

      Progress became possible thanks to the persistence of investigators and forensic experts of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region. A properly chosen interrogation strategy, competent organization of the investigative-operational group's work, and the carrying out of necessary examinations made it possible to track down the perpetrator.

      In the summer of 2024, the involvement of a previously convicted resident of Pavlovo in this crime was established. The investigation and the court found that in November 1996 the convicted man was intoxicated when he met an unfamiliar girl and offered to accompany her home. A conflict arose between them, during which the man inflicted multiple knife wounds on the victim. To conceal what he had done, he carried the body behind the school garages and fled.

      The court sentenced him to 29 years' imprisonment with an additional two-year restriction of freedom. He will serve the first 10 years in prison, and the remainder of the term in a high-security penal colony.

      Earlier it was reported that the police had solved a bloody 27-year-old murder in the Volodarsky District.
