For the unofficial Internet Day, which is celebrated in Russia on September 30, Rostelecom presented a portrait of the typical user of the company's home internet and also compared subscribers' preferences depending on their region of residence and connected options. According to analysts, Rostelecom provides internet access services to more than 40% of Russian families (13.7 million households as of the first half of 2025). The portrait was compiled based on an analysis of anonymized data of 785 thousand subscribers from all of the company's macro-regions.
The typical home internet user is a man aged 35–45. He uses both a PC and a mobile phone to access the internet and is interested in IT, cars and finance. He has a family and at least one pet. According to the company, the average user in 2025 consumes 299 GB of traffic per month. Traffic is steadily growing — in the first half of the current year it increased by 16% compared with 2024. In autumn and winter users spend more time online than in summer — annually, after the decline during the vacation period, a sharp rise begins at the end of September. Peak values are traditionally reached in January and March.
An urban internet user without additional connected options is more often single, is interested in health and educational courses, and rents an apartment. A subscriber living outside the city is married, has children, likes to travel, but mainly within Russia.
A user who has an online cinema connected in their internet package plays sports, owns real estate or plans to acquire it. This category contains the largest share of cat and dog owners. A subscriber who has also connected mobile service is more interested than others in finance, cooking, furniture and interior design, and also more often cares about security and subscribes to antivirus and video surveillance services.
The share of women among users is growing and in 2025 stands at 45.1%; the share of older people has also increased — almost one in five (18.8%) is over 55 years old. Every third (30.8%) uses the internet only from a smartphone. The rarest category — internet users exclusively from a tablet — accounts for 0.17% of the total.
The regions leading in home internet usage are Moscow and the Moscow Region, the South and the Urals (traffic is 13%, 11% and 9% higher than the national average, respectively). Residents of Central Russia were more modest (18% below average), as were those in the Volga region (-11%).
Residents of the Southern and North Caucasian Federal Districts most often connect the Wink.ru online cinema together with their home internet. There are also more gamers there — in the South and North Caucasus regions the "Gaming" tariff plan is connected twice as often as the national average. The most avid readers live in the Far East — the number of those in these subjects who have subscribed to "Rostelecom Books" exceeds the national average by more than two times.
Alexey Demyanenko, Director of Mass Segment Products and Tariffs at Rostelecom:
"Over 90% of the population in Russia use the internet, and our company traditionally serves a large share of them. Therefore we have a large and reliable database on the country's internet users. Of course, this includes people of all ages, interests and family statuses. Our analysis shows that the typical user increases the amount of consumed traffic year by year, often goes online from multiple devices, while the connection of additional options depends on many factors. But one thing is certain: families more actively use service bundles and additional services. We are constantly working to improve infrastructure and internet quality, developing new home and family offers to better meet subscribers' needs."
Users' areas of interest were determined based on provider data about the topics of websites visited three or more times a month, as well as the affinity index of Yandex Audiences.
