Electric vessels will begin operating in Nizhny Novgorod starting in 2026.

      Nizhny Novgorod is preparing to switch to eco-friendly water transport: from 2026 passenger electric vessels are planned to be used on city routes. Issues of river passenger transportation were discussed as part of the Legislative Assembly’s Unified Parliamentary Day at the Volga State University of Water Transport, reports NIA "Nizhny Novgorod".

      A next-generation electric vessel, "Moscow 2.0", designed to carry between 130 and 200 people, is being prepared for service. Its assembly is being handled by the St. Petersburg shipbuilding company Emperium. In addition, the company Vodohod intends to launch another electric vessel called "Fontanka" in 2026, designed to carry up to 80 passengers.

      Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Evgeny Lyulin, told NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" that the development of river transport remains a focus for the regional parliament.

      "We are constantly addressing river transport issues. Nizhny Novgorod Region became the initiator of a federal program aimed at its development. Support measures have appeared, but problems remain — a shortage of vessels and a lack of qualified personnel. These issues are under our control," Lyulin emphasized.

      According to him, over the past five to seven years the work of the Legislative Assembly has achieved steady progress in this area. He expressed confidence that the positive dynamics will continue in the future.

      "River navigation has effectively taken the first step toward recovery. We are discussing these topics and will continue working in this direction," added the regional parliament speaker.

      Earlier it was reported that navigation of the Valdai and Meteor vessels in the Nizhny Novgorod Region will end at the end of October.
