The former first deputy mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, Ilya Shtokman, has been charged with receiving a bribe on a particularly large scale. A criminal case has been opened under Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the Investigative Committee press service said.
Investigators believe that, while serving as first deputy mayor, he received 55 million rubles for assisting the management of a construction company in securing municipal contracts as the sole contractor, for subsequent patronage, and for lenient oversight of their execution.
The illegal actions, according to the investigation, were uncovered jointly with officers of the regional FSB directorate. A search was conducted at Shtokman's place of residence.
The ex-official was detained in Sochi and brought to Nizhny Novgorod. On September 26, the Moskovsky District Court ordered pre-trial detention for two months.
The investigation continues. Investigators are carrying out a range of investigative and other procedural actions to establish all the circumstances, causes and conditions of the incident, and possible other episodes are also being examined.
Earlier, journalists found that Shtokman had turned an apartment building in the center of Nizhny Novgorod into a three-level cottage.
