      The FSB directorate for the Nizhny Novgorod Region uncovered and stopped illegal actions by officials of the regional EMERCOM directorate who are accused of bribery, the security agency’s press service reported.

      According to the investigation, the head of one of EMERCOM’s departments in Dzerzhinsk received 100,000 rubles from the commander of the second fire-rescue detachment of the federal fire service. The money was intended to delay the deadlines for complying with a directive on identified fire-safety violations in the interests of a private company.

      The Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region has opened criminal cases on counts under part 3 of Article 290 and part 2 of Article 291.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The suspects have been placed in custody. Operational-search measures and investigative actions are ongoing to establish other episodes of their unlawful activities.

      Earlier it was reported that the former head of the Nizhny Novgorod penal colony received a 12.5-year sentence for bribery and fraud. In early September it also emerged that four people were convicted of taking bribes at a Nizhny Novgorod defense enterprise.
