      Society — On September 13, the governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Gleb Nikitin, during a working visit to Spassky District, visited the village of Bortsurmany in the Pilninsky precinct. There, together with the head of the municipality, Sergey Bochkankov, he inspected the restoration works at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which are being carried out to preserve its historic appearance and to create comfortable conditions for parishioners.

      As the head of the region wrote on his social media, the stone building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century on the site of an old wooden church.

      Since 2000, this church has celebrated on August 17 the day of the discovery of the relics of Saint Alexius of Bortsurmany, who is considered a great ascetic of piety: for his righteous and ascetic life he received the gift of healing and clairvoyance.

      In the summer, a house-museum dedicated to the saint was opened in Bortsurmany, where the setting in which he lived was recreated. Local historians collected exhibits for many years and restored the saint’s cell with his personal belongings.

      Gleb Nikitin lamented that the original of Alexius’s personal diary is kept in an archive in another region, and Nizhny Novgorod authorities plan to discuss the possibility of its transfer to the museum.
