Melodies instead of bells are once again playing in Nizhny Novgorod schools.

      In September children are introduced to compositions dedicated to Knowledge Day

      Familiar melodies are sounding again in place of bells in Nizhny Novgorod schools. The large-scale project launched by the Russian Ministry of Education in November last year continues into the 2025/2026 school year. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Education and Science.

      In September the project introduces Nizhny Novgorod schoolchildren to compositions dedicated to Knowledge Day. The start and end of lessons are announced by songs such as "First Graders" (lyrics by Stanislav Minakov, music by Olga Olkhova), "Sunlight" (lyrics and music by Alena Maksimova), "My Capital" (lyrics by Stanislav Minakov and Ivan Orekhov, music by Ivan Orekhov), "Step Forward" (lyrics and music by Natalia Ososhnik) and "Alphabet" (lyrics by Aleksandr Tserpyata and Natalia Ososhnik, music by Aleksandr Tserpyata).

      One of the schools participating in the project is Gymnasium No. 1 in the Mulino rural settlement in the Volodarsky district. As noted by the educational institution, students respond to the project with interest and actively support it. During homeroom sessions and "Conversations about Important Things" lessons, pupils discuss themes set by the project each month. This month's theme — fostering children's enthusiasm for receiving a well-rounded education — echoes the priorities of the new national project "Youth and Children."

      "We really like the replacement of school bells with melodies. Throughout last year my classmates and I guessed which melody would be played the next month. This year we started September 1 with our favorite school songs. We hear them — and our mood and readiness to study immediately improve, because the songs are right!" said sixth-grader Andrey Sergeev of Gymnasium No. 1 in the Mulino rural settlement.

      Today, in class 6A during the "Conversations about Important Things" lesson, a film was shown about the achievements of Nizhny Novgorod scientists and figures of the arts. The teacher wanted to show the children what contribution an educated person can make to the development of their native region.

      The children also took tests to determine the skills they already have and areas for development. This is part of the career guidance work being carried out across the region.

      "At the start of the new school year it is very important to help children decide on plans for developing their skills, which is why we conduct such testing with every class. The children respond well to the initiative and answer honestly. At the end of the year we summarize the results and compare the plans with the outcomes achieved," said Gymnasium No. 1 teacher Anastasia Solovyova.

      Reminder: the "Melodies Instead of Bells" project is being implemented by the Russian Ministry of Education together with the Center for Comprehensive Child Development "Progress." The project is aimed at nurturing a harmoniously developed personality and at acquainting schoolchildren with the richness of the country's musical culture.

      The national project "Youth and Children" has been implemented on the instruction of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, since 2025. It includes nine federal projects and programs: "Russia — a Land of Opportunities," "We Are Together," "Russia in the World," "All the Best for Children," "Leading Schools," "Teachers and Mentors," "Creating a Network of Modern Campuses," "Universities for a Generation of Leaders," and "Professionalitet."
