Incidents
Two major incidents of telephone fraud were recorded in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported by the regional headquarters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
The first case occurred in Dzerzhinsk. A 64-year-old woman filed a police report about the theft of a substantial sum of money.
According to the victim, unknown callers identified themselves as employees of a telecommunications company and law enforcement. Under the pretext of the need to so-called "declare" her savings, they convinced the woman to hand all her cash to a trusted courier.
The pensioner, unaware of the deception, collected 2,100,000 rubles and gave them to a man who arrived at her home on the fraudsters' instructions.
The second case occurred in Arzamas. The victim was a 95-year-old local woman. She told police that an unknown caller, claiming to be a police officer, phoned her. He said that her daughter had allegedly caused a traffic accident and was now facing criminal charges.
To "settle the matter," the caller suggested transferring money via a courier. Unaware of the trick, the pensioner took out 1,150,000 rubles wrapped in a plastic bag and handed them to a stranger at the entrance to her building.
Later the woman realized she had been defrauded and reported it to the police.
In both cases, criminal cases were opened under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — "Fraud." Law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation and identifying individuals involved in the crimes.
Earlier it was reported that in Nizhny Novgorod a pensioner gave fraudsters one million rubles in a vacuum cleaner box.
