A new art installation dedicated to Hero of the Soviet Union Yevgeny Alexandrovich Nikonov has appeared in Nizhny Novgorod, the NRO VOD "Victory Volunteers" reported.
The graffiti was created by activists of the regional branch "Victory Volunteers" with the support of the regional government as part of the "Image of Victory" project. Its task is to preserve the historical memory of the feats of heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
Relatives of Nikonov, representatives of the district administration, activists from "Victory Volunteers" and participants of the "Movement of the First" attended the opening ceremony. The commemorative event brought together several generations of Nizhny Novgorod residents.
Yevgeny Nikonov was born in the Nizhny Novgorod region and went to the front in June 1941. On August 19 of the same year, while carrying out a reconnaissance mission near the settlement of Keila in Estonia, he was severely wounded and taken prisoner. After torture, the Nazis burned him alive.
For his displayed courage, the sailor was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. His name was inscribed on the unit's rolls in perpetuity, and ships and educational institutions were named in his honor. In 1992, after an act of vandalism at Nikonov's grave in Tallinn, his remains were reburied with military honors in his native village of Vasilievka in Sechenovsky District.
Maria Samodelkina, head of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of "Victory Volunteers," noted that graffiti is a modern way to express gratitude and preserve the memory of the defenders of the Motherland. According to her, Nikonov's steadfastness and self-sacrifice remain an example for young people.
The hero's name is commemorated in Nizhny Novgorod: a street in the Moskovsky District bears his name, and a monument is installed at School No. 68. The new art installation has become another important symbol connecting generations.
Over five years, 337 patriotic graffiti works dedicated to heroes of the Great Patriotic War and the Special Military Operation (SMO) have been created in the Nizhny Novgorod region as part of the "Image of Victory" project. Any resident of the region can take part in the project by submitting the story of a family hero. Applications are accepted via the hotline numbers 8-831-410-81-10, 8-800-222-00-13 or in the "Victory Volunteers. Nizhny Novgorod Region" community on VKontakte vk.com/niznovgorod.zapobedu.
It was reported that Nizhny Novgorod School No. 129 was named after Hero of the Soviet Union Dmitry Mineev.
