Rospotrebnadzor has appealed to Nizhny Novgorod medical workers, recommending increased vigilance regarding chikungunya fever. This was reported on his Telegram channel by Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the medical publication "Stacionar Press."
The appeal was prompted by two imported cases of the infection into Moscow from Sri Lanka, as well as a deterioration in the epidemiological situation in China. There has been an increase in the populations of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes — the main vectors of the virus. This is linked to flooding and anomalous heat.
The greatest threat is posed by five Chinese provinces: Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
In this regard, the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor suggested organizing additional training events for medical personnel. These will focus particularly on taking an epidemiological history from patients with fever symptoms, including determining recent travel to countries with unfavorable chikungunya situations.
In addition, medical workers were urged to be prepared for prompt diagnosis of suspected cases. This refers to conducting laboratory tests: collecting blood, oropharyngeal swabs and scrapings from skin rashes, if present.
Although most patients with chikungunya recover, complications affecting the eyes, heart and nervous system can develop in some cases.
Earlier, infectious disease specialist Kulova assessed the danger of the chikungunya virus.
