An escaped black stork was spotted in the Vachsky District.

      A black stork that escaped from the Klyazminsko-Lukhskiy Reserve was spotted in the Vachsky District. The escapee is listed in the Red Data Book and has only one nesting site in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the "Friends of the Dront Eco-Center Club" wrote on VKontakte.

      The black stork arrived recently and readily approaches local residents, who feed it worms and fish. Ornithologists note that this species of bird is very cautious and avoids people, but this one differs from its fellows by a peculiar "sociability."

      A witness who saw the stork contacted the regional forestry department, whose staff came to the settlement and tried to capture the bird; however, it did not let them catch it, flew away, and then returned. Ecologists warned that the stork should not be fed, otherwise it will become accustomed, lazy, and refuse to fly south in the hope of being fed here.

      It later emerged that the black stork's name is Kuzya and that he came from the Klyazminsko-Lukhskiy Reserve in Vladimir Oblast. A red leg ring with his number was found on his leg.

      For now they do not intend to capture the bird again: they are hoping that either the bird will fly away on its own, or it will weaken by the end of autumn — and then specialists will be able to catch it there.
