      Cases of infection with a new type of coronavirus called "Stratus" have been registered in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was announced at a press conference at the NOIC by Natalya Sadykova, deputy head of the regional office of Rospotrebnadzor, NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" correspondent reports.

      According to Sadykova, "Stratus" is a variant of the "Omicron" strain and continues its evolution. The virus maintains a high rate of spread, but so far does not cause increased disease severity or a rise in hospitalizations.

      "We are observing an uptick in cases related to changes in the pathogen's structure; however, there are no serious consequences so far," the deputy head of Nizhny Novgorod Rospotrebnadzor noted.

      At the same time, Natalya Sadykova did not name the exact number of infections, noting that detecting "Stratus" requires in-depth genotyping, which is not performed for every case.

      According to the expert, the new variant has already begun to displace other coronavirus strains both in the region and across the country. "Stratus" has become dominant because almost all samples sent for testing show this variant.

      Regarding vaccination, Sadykova explained that vaccine procurement is currently handled by the regions themselves. Last year, high-risk groups were vaccinated first. Purchases have not yet begun in 2025, but the situation continues to be monitored.

      "We will be guided by the Ministry of Health's decisions on purchases and will continue to monitor the spread of 'Stratus'," she concluded.
