A bill is being discussed in Russia that would limit the ability of minors to get tattoos. The impetus for this came from risks related not only to medicine but also to psychology, dermatologist Tatyana Egorova told the TV channel "360".
The specialist emphasized that a tattoo always involves the introduction of coloring substances into the body, and therefore carries potential complications.
According to her, foreign pigments can trigger immune reactions, increase the strain on the body and even become a factor in the development of cancer. In addition, keloid scars can appear in rare cases. The problem is that the body's reaction cannot be predicted, and one has to deal with the consequences.
The psychological side of the issue is no less significant. The doctor reminded that adolescents' psyches are unstable, and decisions at that age are often made impulsively, under the influence of emotions or as an act of protest. Often years later such tattoos become a cause for regret.
A separate problem is the removal of unwanted designs. Egorova noted that this procedure is painful, lengthy and very expensive. Modern lasers that handle the task relatively safely cost millions of rubles and are extremely rare, even in Moscow.
Outdated devices are used more often, such as neodymium ones, which blast out the pigment but leave white marks or scars in the shape of the design. With careless operation a burn is possible, requiring prolonged treatment and additional care using plasma, creams and ointments.
"It's long, unpleasant and expensive," the dermatologist emphasized.
In conclusion the specialist said she would categorically not recommend that parents allow tattoos for children under 18. In her opinion such decisions should be made consciously and in maturity, and not become an expression of teenage rebellion.
