Society. On Knowledge Day, about 2,200 first-year students began their studies at the Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas medical colleges, the regional Ministry of Health reported.

Classes for future medical professionals are held not only in Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas, but also at branches of the educational institutions in Vyksa, Kstovo and Lukoyanov, as well as on network sites deployed at the Gorodets and Lyskovo Central District Hospitals. Ceremonial events were held in all of these units, during which students took an oath of allegiance to medicine and donned white coats.

According to the ministry, this year among the first-year students of the region’s medical colleges are 106 children of participants in the special military operation, as well as a direct participant in combat operations, a veteran of the special operation.

Applicants faced a high level of competition when applying to the colleges. The most popular specialties were “Nursing” (with a passing score of 4.75), “Pharmacy” (4.70), “General Medicine” (4.47) and “Medical Optics” (4.14). Both educational institutions fully met their student enrollment plans for the 2025/2026 academic year in all programs.

College directors and teachers addressed the freshmen with words of encouragement and good wishes. They stressed the importance of diligent study, active mastery of professional knowledge and skills, and constant self-development.

Vladimir Grechko, director of the Nizhny Novgorod Medical College, said in his speech that the students made the right choice in selecting the difficult but noble profession of a medical worker.

“You will study at one of the best medical colleges in the country. Our institution is known for the achievements of its students and graduates both in academics and professional activities. You will have to honorably uphold the high standard earned by your predecessors through their knowledge and skills — those who took first places in professional skills competitions and actively participated in the public and scientific life of the city and region. You will take part in this serious work as well,” Vladimir Grechko emphasized.

Galina Trofimova, director of the Arzamas Medical College, wished the freshmen dedication and patience. She noted that the knowledge and skills acquired by students in college should serve the benefit of patients.

“The first year of medical college is a serious test even for the best-prepared students. A huge volume of new subjects, complex concepts and medical terminology requires full dedication and patience. This period lays the foundation for future professional competencies of a medical professional and forms the habit of regular learning and development. The main thing to remember is: difficulties are temporary; ahead of you awaits an interesting and important profession — saving human lives,” Galina Trofimova advised the students.
