A project to preserve the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland has been launched in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

      On September 1, a project for the patriotic education of youth through the stories of defenders from the Great Patriotic War, participants in the special military operation and other armed conflicts — "Heroes of the Motherland" — was launched in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. It is being implemented with the support of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, the regional branch of the All‑Russian public movement "Volunteers of Victory" and the organizers of the project "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region."

      The project was ceremonially launched on the Day of Knowledge. "Lessons of Courage" were held at 15 educational institutions in Nizhny Novgorod, where contemporary defenders of the Fatherland — veterans of the special military operation, participants in the "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" program — spoke. They also joined the ceremonial assemblies and the flag‑raising ceremony.

      Thus, at Gymnasium No. 184 a veteran of the special military operation, a recipient of two Orders of Courage and a participant in the "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" project, Alexander Molgachev, spoke to the students.

      "I spoke with the children, told them about the special operation, about the courage and heroism of its participants, and shared thoughts about what fear is and how to overcome it. I believe that such a project will help instill a sense of patriotism and pride in our country in the younger generation. Just as for us, the participants of the 'Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region' project, the experience gained in the special military operation and the qualities acquired there will help us realize ourselves in public service," noted Alexander Molgachev.

      A "Lesson of Courage" also took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Polytechnic College named after Hero of the Soviet Union A. P. Rudnev, where there was a meeting with SMO veteran Vladislav Dalekin, who was awarded the Medal "For Courage" and the St. George's Cross, 4th class. In turn, students of School No. 20 met with Dmitry Serov, who was awarded the Medal "For Military Merit" and the Medal "Participant in the Special Military Operation" for demonstrated courage. A meeting with Mikhail Kryukov, a recipient of the Medal "For Merit to the Fatherland" II class, was held at School No. 115.

      "'Heroes of the Motherland' is a project that connects the past, present and future. A living dialogue between generations is extremely important to us. Children must understand that heroes live among us and that heroism is not something abstract but real deeds by real people. This is the only way patriotism is fostered — through living examples. We give the youngsters a unique opportunity to see contemporary heroes, hear their stories, ask any, even uncomfortable, questions and understand that such values as courage and love for the Motherland are timeless," said Maria Samodelkina, head of the Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the All‑Russian public movement "Volunteers of Victory."

      The project is scheduled to run until the end of the school year. Many more meetings with real heroes lie ahead for Nizhny Novgorod schoolchildren and students. Volunteers of Victory will organize master classes and lectures in the region's educational institutions, where historians and experts will speak about the meaning and examples of heroism in various historical periods. There will also be quests and intellectual games in which students will learn about the history of the region and the country in an interactive and informative format.
