      This summer a new GOST for school uniforms was actively discussed across Russia. Parents feared children would be forced to wear identical old‑fashioned blazers and skirts. But last year the Nizhny Novgorod region presented its own clothing option. NewsNN looked into whether it will be introduced, and what students will wear.

      What is the new GOST for school uniforms, and why did it cause panic

      From September 3, 2025, a new standard for student uniforms will come into force in Russia. The document regulates the quality of school clothing: its hygroscopicity, air permeability, colorfastness and the safety of fittings. Only items that meet the requirements will be able to receive the “school uniform” label.

      On social media the GOST provoked a strong reaction after samples were presented by a Tver factory. Parents called the suits “old‑fashioned” and compared them to outfits from the film Office Romance (6+).

      Nizhny Novgorod school uniform: what the design looks like

      At the same time, a year ago the Volga capital presented its own school uniform project. It was developed by designer Evgenia Komissarova. Options included sets with a jacket and a vest, pants or a skirt. Price — up to 15,000 rubles.

      A distinctive feature of the Nizhny Novgorod uniform is a lining with a map of the region. The clothing is made in gray with light blue accents, and the silhouettes are loose — that was the teenagers’ wish. In addition to classic blazers, the collection includes sweatshirts and transformer jackets. The project sparked debate: some parents praised the idea and the design, others criticized the price and the color scheme:

      “Wear it yourselves for that kind of money,” “We’re sick of your oversized stuff, fashionistas,” “It’s high time to develop a single standard, not like us… everyone wears whatever they like,” — they wrote on social media at the time.

      Will a single school uniform ultimately be introduced in the Nizhny Novgorod region

      The regional education ministry explained to NewsNN that the GOST does not oblige schools to switch to a single uniform. Each educational institution has the right to independently decide what the children’s clothing will be and to take into account the opinions of parents.

      “Educational institutions have the right to set requirements for the appearance, color and style of clothing taking into account the opinions of parents and students,” the ministry said.

      As for Evgenia Komissarova’s collection, ANO “Center 800” noted that they do not plan to implement it this year. Thus, no abrupt changes in school uniforms in the Nizhny Novgorod region are expected. The GOST only guarantees quality and safety, while style and price remain at the discretion of schools and parents.
