The Ministry of Forestry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has published fresh data on the status of wild animal populations in the region. As the ministry told NIA "Nizhny Novgorod", the numbers of most game species remain stable, and moderate increases are observed for a number of species.

According to specialists, in recent years the region has seen increases in moose, brown bears, lynxes, European and Siberian roe deer, beavers, as well as brown hares and white hares. One of the factors contributing to this has been the regular implementation by hunters and land users of biotechnical measures on hunting grounds.

Thus, the moose population in the region stands at 25,604 individuals. The largest number of these animals was recorded in the Semenovsky municipal district — 3,609 individuals. Large populations also inhabit the Voskresensky (1,760), Varnavinsky (1,460) and Vetluzhsky (1,252) districts.

The brown bear population in the Nizhny Novgorod Region is estimated at 1,521 individuals. Leaders by numbers were Varnavinsky (204), Voskresensky (202), Semenovsky (180) and Vetluzhsky (160) districts.

The lynx population reached 622 individuals. The most of these predators were registered in Sokolsky (97), Varnavinsky and Semenovsky (64 each), and Krasnobakovsky (39) municipal districts.

White hares remain the most numerous species — there are 49,796 of them. The largest populations live in the urban district of the town of Bor (4,745), Semenovsky (4,570), Vetluzhsky (4,451) and Varnavinsky (3,764) districts.

There are 3,845 brown hares in the region. The most are in Sergachsky (440), Pilninsky (273), Spassky (241) and Perevozsky (222) municipal districts.

There are 2,959 foxes in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Their main habitats are Pochinkovsky (176), Lukoyanovsky (119), Voznesensky (108) and Knyagininsky (101) districts.

The wolf population is estimated at 24 individuals. The largest numbers of these predators were recorded in Lukoyanovsky and Lyskovsky districts — 5 each. However, as the Ministry of Forestry notes, wolves move actively and may appear in various areas, including those bordering other regions.

The ministry pays special attention to controlling the wild boar population due to the threat of African swine fever. Targeted reductions are being carried out for this purpose. As a result of such measures, the wild boar population decreased from 810 individuals in 2024 to 634 in 2025. The largest numbers of animals were recorded in Semenovsky (58), Voskresensky (48), Gorodetsky (33) and Sokolsky (32) districts.

The increase in wild animal numbers, the ministry estimates, has been made possible by a well-thought-out nature conservation policy and the systematic implementation of biotechnical measures. These include the installation of salt licks for moose and hares, feeders for roe deer, and the construction of observation towers.

The ministry emphasizes that such measures help create favorable living conditions for animals, provide access to food resources and help maintain stable populations of game species in the region.

Earlier it was reported that 152 hunters received permits to harvest moose, wild boar, roe deer and brown bear in the publicly accessible hunting grounds of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
