      The Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, ordered a report to be submitted on the criminal case opened after the deaths of five residents of Balakhna in the Nizhny Novgorod Region from poisoning by alcoholic products. This was reported by the information center of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

      The criminal case is being investigated by the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The head of the regional directorate, Ayrat Akhmetshin, at Bastrykin's instruction is to report on the circumstances established during the initial investigative actions. A final report will be presented upon completion of the investigation.

      The execution of the instruction is being monitored by the central office of the Investigative Committee.

      Recall that on August 30 and 31, five people died after consuming surrogate alcohol. A criminal case has been opened under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — the sale of products that do not meet safety requirements, which through negligence resulted in the death of two or more persons.

      Police are currently inspecting retail outlets where the victims may have purchased the alcoholic products.

      The regional prosecutor's office has initiated oversight measures, within which a legal assessment will be given to compliance with the legislation regulating the circulation of alcoholic and alcohol-containing products.

      It was previously reported that in 2024 almost 150 Nizhny Novgorod residents were poisoned by surrogate alcohol.
