      The Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, congratulated workers of the nuclear industry on the 80th anniversary of the sector. This was reported by the press service of the regional government.

      According to the head of the region, the anniversary of the nuclear industry is not merely a professional holiday, but an event of global scale.

      "If not for those discoveries and developments that began 80 years ago, the world would be very different," emphasized Gleb Nikitin.

      He noted that the anniversary is an occasion to recall the colossal path that began in August 1945. It was then that the foundations of what later became peaceful nuclear energy were laid.

      "In less than a decade the world's first nuclear power plant was created. It opened a new era — the era of the peaceful atom. I am proud that our region made a significant contribution to this historic achievement," the governor said.

      Gleb Nikitin recalled that the engineering and manufacturing centers of the Gorky, and later Nizhny Novgorod, regions became some of the key drivers of scientific and technological progress in the nuclear field.

      Reactor units for nuclear icebreakers were developed here, work was carried out in the field of small-scale generation, as well as on the core zones of innovative fast-neutron reactors. These technologies made it possible to address the tasks of closing the nuclear fuel cycle and expanding the resource base of nuclear energy.

      According to the governor, the region's production facilities for decades manufactured unique equipment for nuclear power plants both in Russia and abroad, strengthening the country's positions on the international stage.

      Gleb Nikitin paid particular attention to the role of the state corporation "Rosatom", which, he said, has become a worthy successor to the traditions of the Soviet scientific and engineering school and has brought the industry to a world level.

      "Relying on the foundation laid by previous generations, Rosatom has not only preserved unique competencies but has also made a qualitative breakthrough. Today Russia is a leader in the field of clean energy, building modern nuclear power plants around the world and possessing the world's only nuclear icebreaker fleet," the head of the region noted.

      In closing his address, Gleb Nikitin expressed gratitude to veterans and current workers of the nuclear industry for their contribution to the development of the energy of the future, wishing them good health, professional success and new achievements.
