Incidents
In Nizhny Novgorod, police detained a man who, according to investigators, served as a courier for telephone scammers. He took a large sum of money — 1,495,000 rubles — from a 66-year-old resident of the city.
Unknown callers phoned the pensioner and convinced him that it was necessary to hand over cash for an alleged mandatory declaration. Believing the callers, the man handed the money to the courier, unaware of the fraud.
A criminal case on fraud has been opened against the detainee. The suspect is unemployed and is currently under a written undertaking not to leave.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating whether the courier may be involved in other similar episodes. The investigation continues.
The Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian Interior Ministry reminds citizens to exercise caution when talking to strangers on the phone. In the case of suspicious calls, it is recommended to immediately end the conversation and contact the police.
Earlier it was reported that the head of a Nizhny Novgorod firm handed nearly one million rubles to scammers.
