What is known about the construction of the Nizhny Novgorod metro?

      Construction of new metro stations in the upland part of Nizhny Novgorod is underway on several sections at once. Work here is planned to be completed by December 2026 — a year later than the original deadline. In the Zarechnaya part, active work has not yet begun, although completion of the new station there was also planned for the end of 2026.

      The editorial staff of NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has compiled everything known about the construction so far.

      Between "Sennaya" and "Ploshchad Svobody"

      A second running tunnel is currently being built between the "Sennaya" and "Ploshchad Svobody" stations. In early August it was reported that a tunnel boring machine (TBM) had covered 250 meters out of the planned 1.5 kilometers.

      Meanwhile, JSC "Mosproekt-3" announced an auction for the supply of locomotives and rolling stock required for the construction of the metro section from "Gorkovskaya" to "Sennaya", as well as a three-belt escalator for the station under construction at "Ploshchad Svobody". By the way, soil tests are continuing at its construction site, where the ground was previously reinforced using modern technologies.

      A bypass road will be built in the area of the future "Sennaya" station. However, "Mosproekt-3" is already announcing the search for a contractor for the third time. Initially, work was planned to begin no later than May 13.

      At Ploshchad Svobody work continues on the construction pit. It is from here that new tunnel-boring shields are planned to be launched in the autumn toward "Gorkovskaya". It was also reported that the construction schedule for the metro station’s headshaft at the square was moved to October.

      Preparation for construction in Sormovo

      The Sormovo station was also promised to be delivered in December 2026, but it is already clear that the deadlines for this project will slip. Preparations of the site for construction are still ongoing. Objects are being cleared from the future metro zone — the list includes 740 garages and nine non-residential buildings.

      At the same time, engineering and geological surveys are being carried out. In July drilling began under the bed of the Levinka River, where tunnels between the "Burevestnik" and "Sormovskaya" stations will run in the future. In total, two boreholes 35 meters deep each are planned.

      The contract to build the "Sormovskaya" metro station was signed in August 2022. It is to be located near Stantsionnaya Street, next to the railway platform.

      Due to delays, the customer — the municipal institution GUMMiD — filed a claim against the contractor for almost 2 billion rubles. The parties are now resolving the matter legally, discussing the size of the penalty, the mechanism and timing of its payment.

      JSC "Mosproekt-3" expects to receive a positive conclusion of the state expertise on the initial stages of construction of the "Sormovskaya" metro station by the end of the year.

      Cost and challenges of the project

      The total cost of building the metro in the Sormovsky district is 19.4 billion rubles, and in the upland part — over 35 billion.

      In June, Governor Gleb Nikitin commented on the prolonged work. He said that the construction of the new metro line is accompanied by a number of serious technological difficulties. In particular, the slow pace of construction is related to heavy soils, a dense network of underground utilities and the presence of a large number of cultural heritage sites on the surface.

      Add that in February 2025 Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin visited the Nizhny Novgorod metro construction sites and ordered acceleration of the construction.
