An archival exhibition about Gorky's contribution to aviation was presented for City Day.

      On the eve of Russian Air Fleet Day, employees of the State Socio-Political Archive of the Nizhny Novgorod Region presented a thematic photo-documentary exhibition (12+). This was reported by the Committee on Archives of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

      The exhibition is timed to the holiday, which is celebrated annually on August 17. The archive recalled that Nizhny Novgorod, formerly called Gorky, played a key role in the development of domestic aviation.

      As emphasized by the head of the Committee on Archives of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Boris Pudalov, historical materials confirm that it was in this city that the country’s air fleet was actively formed. According to him, special attention was paid to the development of aviation in Soviet times. Thus, under the Gorky regional party committee there was a special commission for selection to flight schools, aeroclubs were created, and aeromodelling was actively developed.

      “This large-scale work allowed our aviation to withstand the trials of the Great Patriotic War with dignity,” Pudalov noted.

      The exhibition features 17 archival documents, including materials from the 1930s–1940s about the activities of Gorky aeroclubs and pilot training. The exhibition also displays biographical documents recounting the feats of pilots Vasily Ryazanov and Arseny Vorozheykin.

      It was previously reported that the celebration of Apple Spas (0+) will take place in Nizhny Novgorod on August 19.
