      The head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, ordered a criminal case to be opened into a road traffic accident in the Nizhny Novgorod region in which a 17-year-old teenager died. The agency reported this.

      The fatal crash was reported in a segment on a federal channel. It concerned a tragedy that occurred more than five years ago. The victim's parents are still seeking to bring the alleged perpetrator of the accident to justice.

      According to the victim's mother, on the day of the tragedy two teenagers were planning to get from the suburbs to Nizhny Novgorod. They took a car from a relative but, not having driver's licenses, asked an 18-year-old acquaintance to drive. It later emerged that he also did not have a driver's license.

      On the way to the city the driver lost control, the car ran off the road and crashed into a tree. One teenager died at the scene, the other passenger sustained serious injuries. The driver was trapped in the cabin; rescuers freed him by cutting through the vehicle's body.

      The victim's parents believe the investigation is being deliberately delayed. In their view, the young man avoided punishment thanks to his family's connections.

      Alexander Bastrykin instructed the head of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod region not only to open a criminal case but also to submit a report on all the established circumstances of the tragedy.

      Earlier it was reported that Bastrykin demanded a report on the progress of the investigation into the death of a child after the collapse of the wall of an old, long-unused garage at Avtozavod.
