At the "Shalyapin. Birth of an Artist" festival in the Protected Quarters, visitors can enjoy concerts, performances, and creative workshops.

      From August 21 to 24, in the Nemetskaya Square of the Trinity-Sorrow Monastery in Nizhny Novgorod, the fifth jubilee music and educational festival "Shalyapin. The Birth of an Artist" (0+) will take place, continuing the traditions of the famous project "Shalyapin on the Balcony." This year's program is dedicated to the development of the great bass — from his first steps in a provincial choir to worldwide fame. The festival is organized by "Zapovednye Kvartaly" NGO "ASIRIS" (Agency for Preservation and Development of Objects of the Historical Environment of the Nizhny Novgorod Region) with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.

      Festival program:

      August 21, 20:00 — performance at the windows of the historic estate "Windows into the Artist’s Life." Viewers will learn how the future opera singer became interested in singing and theater, how he became an artist, and who he met along his life path.

      August 22, 18:00 — concert "A Star Was Born!", featuring bass Dmitry Grigoriev (Mariinsky Theatre), piano by Alexey Timushev;

      August 23, 18:00 — "Teachers and Students" concert with young vocalists and teachers from the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory;

      August 24, 18:00 — final concert of the "Nizhny Novgorod" choir with Russian classical cappella.

      Additionally, the festival includes lectures on Shalyapin's creative journey, featuring art historian Sabina Melnik (August 22, 17:00) and event curator Ksenia Anufrieva (August 24, 17:00); acting masterclasses for children by theater director Lev Kharlamov (August 23-24, 10:00–18:30); creative activities with museum educator Yulia Bimendina (August 22-24); and seminars for teachers — "Practices for Unlocking Teenagers’ Creative Potential" by artist Yakov Khorev and "Reading with Pauses in Theatrical Pedagogy" with theater and film actor Valery Kukushkin (August 23, 12:00–17:00).

      All events will be held at the historic venues of the Three Saints Quarter: near the Gusev estate (Slavyanskaya St., 4) and in the Garden of Dreamers (Korolenko St., 17).

      Since 2021, the project has been held at "Zapovednye Kvartaly" across various venues, including the balcony of a house on Korolenko Street, 11 (formerly Kanatnaya St.), where Maxim Gorky lived in 1900–1901. Fyodor Shalyapin visited him, often singing on the balcony, gathering local audiences. This historical fact inspired the musical project.

      Note:

      Since 2021, the "ASIRIS" NGO has been implementing a large-scale event program at "Zapovednye Kvartaly." It includes interactive excursions, music festivals, exhibitions, lecture series, and masterclasses, including unique concerts for Nizhny Novgorod — "Shalyapin on the Balcony" and "Jazz in the Garden."

      The quarter has earned a prominent place on the city route map and has become a new attraction for tourists.

      "Zapovednye Kvartaly" NGO "ASIRIS" is a project aimed at preserving and developing the historical environment of Nizhny Novgorod. It features 28 wooden cultural heritage sites with unique architecture. Residents and visitors find a quiet spot right in the city center, where every detail inspires grounding and relaxation.
