Society Surgeons at the University Clinic of the Privolzhsk Research Medical University (PIMU) reattached a part of the hand severed by a saw to a 61-year-old resident of the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported by the university's press service.
The man sustained severe injuries while working with a circular saw. The almost completely cut-off part of his hand was held only by a narrow skin flap 2-3 centimeters wide. The injured man was transported from Semenov to Traumatology and Orthopedics Department No. 3.
The operation lasted 2.5 hours. Surgeons used microsurgical tools to restore blood vessels, nerves, and tendons in the damaged limb segment. The surgical team included two trauma-orthopedic surgeons, an anesthesiologist-reanimatologist, and nurses.
"The operation was complex, requiring surgical precision. But we have already mastered the technique for such procedures," said trauma-orthopedic surgeon Sergey Petrov.
According to him, there is a limited "window" of time for each amputation case during which replantation is possible. The larger the segment, the less time medical professionals have. In this case, the limb was of medium size, and the doctors managed to perform the operation in time.
The patient is currently in a cast and is already attempting to move his fingers. Doctors plan to discharge him next week. He will then continue treatment at his place of residence and will return for a follow-up appointment in a month. A lengthy rehabilitation awaits him.
The operating team included trauma-orthopedic surgeons Sergey Petrov and Sergey Kuvshinov, anesthesiologist-reanimatologist Ekaterina Baturina, operating nurse Anna Yurina, and nurse-anesthetist Tatyana Likina.
It was previously reported that a baby with a rare congenital heart defect was rescued at the Nizhny Novgorod Cardiac Center.
