Society NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" - Sergey Bishletov In Nizhny Novgorod, construction of a cable car over the Oka River has begun. According to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod," the first phase of work started on August 7 on Zarechny Boulevard — around 14:30 Moscow time, special equipment began digging the start pit.
The section is complex
The cable car will have three stations: "Zarechnaya" near the "Russia" cinema building, "Tikhaya Gavan" on Baumana Street in the area of buildings №19-21, and "Gagarin Prospekt" near the Oceanis shopping center.
As Svetlana Trishina, Director of Project Implementation at UrbanTech, told journalists, construction will begin at the "Zarechnaya" station, then proceed to "Gagarin Prospekt." The last will be "Tikhaya Gavan." Completion of main works is planned for the end of 2026, but then additional time will be needed for commissioning activities (approximately several months).
The section is complex — there are many underground utilities, so more time will be required. The architectural concept of the cable car was developed by the well-known Nizhny Novgorod architect Stanislav Gorshunov. All stations will feature architectural lighting to create an attractive appearance in the evening, Trishina noted.
The company emphasized that construction work will be carried out strictly within permitted hours, taking into account the interests of residents of nearby buildings.
One of the technically challenging areas will be the zone where the emergency collector of the Rzhavka River runs. To protect it, the contractor will install a special barrier to prevent damage.
Regarding the green spaces, several hundred trees will need to be felled in the "Tikhaya Gavan" area and on Gagarin Avenue. According to Trishina, about 70 million rubles are allocated for compensatory landscaping. After construction is completed, landscaping along Zarechny Boulevard is planned. During construction, a temporary building for the contractor's operational headquarters will also be erected.
Passenger flow — 30,000 per day
According to the project, the cable car will consist of 60 cabins with a capacity of eight people each. It will be able to carry up to 30,000 passengers daily. Deputy Minister of Transport of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Denis Ryabinin, reported that about 100,000 people live within the cable car zone. He expects the daily passenger volume to reach at least 10,000 people. Authorities are confident that this target can be achieved through traffic regulation.
The project also includes creating transfer parking lots on Lenin and Gagarin Avenues to reduce street traffic. Thus, anyone will be able to reach each future cable car station by car or taxi and then transfer into a cabin.
The total investment in construction amounts to 5.2 billion rubles. UrbanTech Group noted that initially, the amount was lower, but calculations were based on 2022 prices. The regional Ministry of Transport states that successful implementation of the project could spur the construction of new cable cars in the city.
Company representatives, responding to NIA "Nizhny Novgorod," clarified that all elements of the future cable car will be supplied from abroad. Suppliers have assured that no logistical delays are expected.
Recall that in July, the cable car connecting Nizhny Novgorod and Bor transported a record number of people — 356,713 passengers.
