A resident of Nizhny Novgorod became a victim of phone scammers, losing over 5 million rubles after a conversation with a fake bank employee.

A 21-year-old woman reported to the police that an unknown person called her and pretended to be an employee of a financial institution. The man claimed that criminals who had accessed her personal data were allegedly attempting to obtain loans in her name.

To "prevent" illegal actions, the caller suggested that the woman apply for loans at various banks herself and transfer all her funds, including personal savings, to so-called "safe accounts." The assertive tone of the conversation partner did not raise suspicion in the victim, and she followed all instructions.

The total amount transferred was 5,314,000 rubles. Later, realizing she had been scammed, the woman contacted the police.

A criminal case has been initiated under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — "Fraud in especially large amounts." Law enforcement officers are currently investigating all the circumstances of the incident.

The police once again remind citizens to adhere to financial safety measures. No bank requires funds to be transferred to "safe" accounts — such offers are always a scam.

If you receive suspicious calls allegedly from bank representatives, immediately end the conversation and independently call back your bank using the number listed on the back of your card.

In case of suspicion of fraud, you should urgently block your card and contact the police at 02 or 102 (from a mobile phone).

It was previously reported that scammers managed to steal 500,000 rubles from a pensioner in Nizhny Novgorod.
