Recently, the so-called "electric scooter scoliosis" has been discussed in society, which supposedly can occur due to prolonged use of scooters. Experts claim that extended use of electric scooters can lead to functional muscle imbalances and postural disorders. Symptoms include back pain, shoulder asymmetry, and muscle asymmetry.
General practitioner Roman Fishkin states that electric scooter scoliosis is a temporary postural disturbance, but even it can affect the body. A curvature of the spine can develop from just 40 minutes of riding daily over 3–6 months. People with pre-existing scoliosis, weak back muscles, and a sedentary lifestyle are especially at risk, the specialist noted in a conversation with the "360" TV channel.
To minimize risks, Fishkin recommends maintaining proper riding posture: feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, straight back, looking forward, hands without tilting. It is also important to periodically switch supporting legs, avoid uneven surfaces, and take breaks.
For prevention, strengthening back muscles through hyperextensions, pull-ups, planks, and abdominal exercises is recommended. Stretching for all parts of the spine and massage are also beneficial.
Fishkin advises limiting riding time to 30–40 minutes without breaks, alternating it with walking or running to evenly distribute the load.
An epidemic of electric scooter scoliosis is not imminent, but constant use can disrupt posture, especially in children with underdeveloped spines.
Despite the popularity of electric scooters, Fishkin is confident that an epidemic of electric scooter scoliosis is unlikely. True scoliosis is caused by genetic and structural factors, and electric scooters cannot induce it. However, continuous use of scooters may lead to postural issues such as kyphosis or hyperlordosis, particularly in children and teenagers with immature spines.
