In the Nizhny Novgorod region, an experiment continues to improve city roads using artificial intelligence, reported by the regional Ministry of Digital Development.
Since November 2024, a pilot project has been operating in Nizhny Novgorod, Kstovo, Dzerzhinsk, Semenov, Arzamas, and Krasnye Baki, helping to monitor the condition of street infrastructure.
The main tool used is an ordinary smartphone mounted in the cabin of public transport vehicles. A domestic application is installed on it, which automatically records video and uploads it to cloud storage.
The system detects various issues: potholes and cracks on asphalt, worn-out markings, broken or tilted traffic signs, non-functioning streetlights, emergency poles, illegal advertisements, and snow-covered road sections in winter. It also notices if garbage containers are overflowing.
The primary advantage is mobility. The smartphone can be easily moved to another bus to cover more routes and gather a comprehensive picture of road conditions.
All information from the devices is promptly transmitted to responsible services responsible for addressing the issues found.
Since the system's implementation, 638 incidents have been recorded. Of these, 469 were resolved before residents could complain.
It was previously reported that AI would be used to detect fires and illegal logging in the forests of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
